The boys and girls track and field teams travelled down to Wells High School on Friday for a 4 way meet against Wells, Falmouth, and Fryeburg. The weather ranged from sunny and beautiful to cloudy and rainy but overall the temperature and lack of wind made it a great day for competition. The boys team finished 2nd behind Falmouth and the girls team finished 4th. Link to full results
Overall the meet went exceptionally well. From a “qualifying for states” standpoint the team now has 13 individuals qualifed in a large variety of events and from an individual improvement standpoint we had so many career bests I am not sure I can cover them all in one post. We also had several top 5 all-time performances and 1 new school record. Mohamed Dahia broke his own school record in the 110m hurdles running 16.11 which is currently the fastest time in the state in Class C and the 2nd fastest time in the state in any class. Evan Kendall tied for 4th on the all-time list with his vault of 8’6″ and Asad Dahia moved into 4th on the list in the high jump by clearing 5’5″. On the girls side Moira Lachance cleared 4’6″ in the high jump on her 3rd attempt to win the event and secure a spot tied for 5th on the all-time list.
In addition to Mo’s record setting hurdle performance Jake Susla was able to qualify for the state meet in his first 110m hurdle race of the season hitting a career best time of 19.72 and finishing 4th. In the boys 100m dash Michael McIntosh placed 5th in his first career HS race running 12.38 and was followed closely by Nick Rayder. In the 200m Moira Lachance was able to shave almost half a second off her career best time in the 200m while Nick Rayder was just over half a second faster running 25.71. In the 400m Nick Kolkin ran a strong season opener finishing just a hair off his career best time in 56.41(provisinal qualifier) for 2nd while Morgan Scully ran her first ever open 400m race and finished 2nd as well with 69.16 which is a provisional state qualifying time. The lastly in the sprint/hurdle group was the 300m hurdles where Jake Susla chopped almost 2 seconds off his career best 300m hurdle time to finish 2nd and Maura Anderson raced the event for the first time ever and finished first.
In the distances Hillary Detert had a great day finishing 5th in the 1600m and 1st in the 3200m to qualify automatically for states in both events. Her time in the 3200 was also a career best by 4 seconds. Hadley Gibson stepped up big in the girls 800m in a strong field finishing well ahead of her goal time and just a hair behind her personal best. On the boys side Evan Kendall, Rudy Guliani, and Brian Trelegan ran the 1600m and finished 5,6,9 in a strong field. More impressive was that Evan had a 12 second career best while both Brian and Rudy where within a second of theirs. In the 800 Alex Coffin and Cam Regan finished 1-2 after dominating the race from start to finish. Alex set a quick pace from the gun going through the 400 in 58 seconds and holding on to run 2:05 (the fastest time in Class C so far this season) while Cam Regan ran an almost 6 second career best to finish just behind Alex in 2:07. And in the 3200m the boys all ran gutsy races with Evan Kendall going right to the front from the gun and running a 28 second career best to finish 2nd while Rudy and Brian took different strategies and ran on pace with the pack. Rudy finished 3rd with a strong kick and Brian hung on for 8th.
In the jumps – I already spoke about Moira and her state qualifying and winning high jump as well as Asad and his 2nd place finish but in addition we had Nick Rayder finish 3rd and Ethan Liu (on the 2nd day he has ever jumped) place 5th. In the long jump Mo was able to sneak one jump in before having to leave but it was good enough for a 3rd place finish. The boys pole vaulters had a challenge at the meet since this competition was bascially their first time vaulting with a bar in place all season. They rose to the occassion though finishing 3-4-5 (Alden, Evan, Cam Regan) at heights of 9′, 9′, 8’6″. Alden and Cam had vaulted higher last season but those heights look good for this early in the season.
In the throws Elanor West tried out Javelin for the first time and finish 9th with a solid toss of 36’5″ while on the Boys side Robert Field finished 5th with a HUGE career best (over 14′) of 107’7″ breaking into the triple digits for the first time while Cam Rayder hit his first ever throw in the 90s with a career best toss of 96′. In the discus circle (which was located about 1/5 of a mile away) 2 out of 3 boys had career best throws – Alden Kelsey broke into the 90′ range throwing 95’4″ which was good for 2nd while AJ Hardy broke into the 80s throwing 85’6″ for 5th. On the girls side Kayla rose was the sole improvement on the day throwing 56’10” for a new season best while Morgan Scully just missed her career best throwing 69’7″ to place 4th. In the shot circle the girls team had the majority of the improvements with 3 of 4 girls hitting new career bests. Morgan placed 5th with a new best of 26’1″ Julia Thompson had a MASSIVE career best throw of 24’9″ (over 3′ best) and missed scoring by one place while Kayla improved by almost 2′ throwing 22’1″. Emily Harrison was getting her feet back under her after missing the first meet but her first meet back in action is encouraging for the future. On the boys side Cam was 2nd and AJ was 4th but the only best on the day was Robert Field who improved by over a foot to hit 31’11”.
The relays came together nicely during the meet. The boys 4×100 (Rudy, Nick R., Sam, Nick K.) finished 4th but with a season best of 49 seconds. Both 4x400m teams finished the meet in style with the girls cuttting almost 20 seconds off of their time from Hyde with Hadley, Moira, Kayla, and Morgan finishing in 5:04 for 3rd. On the boys side Cam Regan, Jonas Damion, Alex Coffin, and Nick Kolkin combined for a first place finish by almost 100m. Their final time was 3:48.
The golden shoe was award to Cam Regan for the boys thanks to his impressive efforts in the 4×4, the pole vault, and his huge career best in the 800m. The girls shoe was actually award to a pair – The Moira/Maura combo. Moira Lachance for her state qualifying efforts in winning the girls high jump and her improvements in the open and relay sprints and to Maura Anderson for her gutsy race in the 300m hurdles. Maura had never run a race longer than 200m not to mention a race that has 8 hurdles between her and the finish line. She was forced to run her first ever 300m hurdle race all alone on the track with no one to push her yet despite falling over the 6th hurdle she got up and finished the race to earn a rare and covetted first place finish for the team. Congratulations to all on a strong outing. The team will be back in action on Tuesday at Greely High School. Hope to see you there.
