The North Yarmouth Academy Indoor Track & Field team was back at it on Friday night down at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham for our second meet of the regular season. Several individuals tried events for the first time while many athletes were able to best their performances from last week. There were even a few performances that resulted in career bests!
In the hurdles Sam ’21 tried the event for the first time in the junior division and was able to improve on each consecutive hurdle to finish the race in 11th place. In the senior division Jack stumbled in his second week attempt at this hurdle height but was still able to finish just .5 seconds off of his time from last week.
In the shot put Jack B. ’20 placed 2nd overall in the junior division was a toss of 34’11” which was just 6″ out of first place AND a career best throw by over 1 foot. In the senior division Jack S. ’18 and Reece ’18 were both able to improve their throws from last week by over a foot. In the Girls shot Bella ’18 was just shy of her best toss from last week but had 3 strong attempts.
In the long jump Tessa Q. ’18 had a 4″ season best and was just off of her best all-time mark with a jump of 10-8″. On the boy’s side Sam ’21 improved by almost 6″ on his performance from last week while Leo ’18 had his first attempt(s) of the season. In the triple jump Abram ’19 tried the event out for the first time this week and showed real promise with 3 legal attempts and a strong mark of 32’1″.
In the sprints Eleanor and Tessa were just off of their times from last week in the 55m dash in the Jr. and Sr. division respectively. Markus ’19 was also just off of his mark from last week (although this week he raced in training shoes instead of spikes…) but Abram was able to improve this week by almost a tenth of a second. In the 200m Markus, Reece, and Jack S. all had career best times! Definitely a great showing in the senior division. moving up one more notch to the 400m dash Sam ’21 was at it again and this time was just .01 seconds off of his time from last week but had a LOT left coming into the finish. Jack L ’19 had an extremely strong race cutting over a second off of his time from last week which is also a career best!
In the distance events Kieran ’18 and Leo ’18 were our only representatives. Kieran started us off in the 1 mile run and finished the race in 5:49 after a blazingly fast start. Leo also had a strong fast start in the 800m run and ended up finishing in 3:30.
All in all it was another successful meet and I know we are looking forward to getting back to the early time slot next week. Hope to see you at the track at 3:30 next Friday and if you want more details about the meet or additional photos please use the links below.
