1/22/2011 – Meet Highlights
After a poorly timed snow day pushed the meet from Friday afternoon the Indoor Track and Field team travelled down to USM Gorham ready to compete.
The meet started out strong with the boys and girls hurdles where Jake Burns (last weeks Jr. Divison MVP) continued his dominance in the Jr. Division hurdles winning the race. Next up the Jr. Division girls took to the track and all three of the competitors (Hannah Hearn, Bailey Clock, and Jillian Bjorn-Caron) set season bests and each placed in the top 5 all time for NYA.
The 1 mile run was strong for NYA once again. Hillary Detert ran the race for the girls and finished in a career best time of 5:55 qualifying for the state meet and placing 4th while Brian Trelegan raced for the boys team and dropped another few seconds off his season best to just miss scoring placing 7th.
We were not able to race any athletes in the boys 400m this week but the Sr. girls took to the spotlight with 2 NYA athletes placing in the top 6. Sasha McLean placed 2nd and Moira Lachance 6th (with a season best time by over 2 seconds!). Emily Claytor took a break for the 800m this week as well to run a very strong debut in the 400m placing 10th.
The 800m was up next and Hannah Hearn and Renee Lamoreau both ran their first ever 800m races amidst a very strong field. Hannah finished 4th in 2:39 while Renee (running in her first ever distance race) finished 9th in 2:50. On the boys side Alex Coffin set a lofty goal and finished a solid race qualifying for states and running a career best time of 2:10 while Jacob Scammon tried the distance events on for size and ran a 2:29.
The 200s were a challenge this week since we had no time to train for the sprints because of the weather. Although we were nice and rested the lack of training took off a bit of our edge yet Nick Rayder seemed uneffected as he dropped his 200 time by almost half a second running 26.7. The same goes for Nyajal Ngoal who has been working on her technique all season and it paid off on Saturday as can be witnessed by her time of 32.8 (over half a second improvement).
The last individual event on the track was the 2 mile. Our only competitor this week was Hannah Twombly who ran the 2 mile for the first time this season and finished 3rd in a state qualifying time of 12:28.
In the field events Moira Lachance equalled her PR in the high jump clearing 4’4″ to tie her season best and place 2nd. In the shotput Cam Rayder threw 1/4″ further and was able to place 4th in the Sr. Division while Sally Lapointe PR’d by over a foot and finished 7th.
Overall the Boys and Girls team both finished 6th. An impressive result given that many of athletes had a rest week this week by only racing 1 of their normal races.
