Long after most of the athletes would have probably gone to bed the NYA Indoor T&F team was still running circles, jumping high & far, and tossing heavy objects at the USM Gorham indoor track. After suffering through another week of freezing temperatures and/or heavy snow (our most challenging workout of the week was sledding!) the team took the track with goals set high.

Jake Burns took center stage again in the boys hurdles – finishing in first place – but this time running 8.94 seconds which shattered his old record. The state qualifying time in this event is 9.00 but since Jake is in the Jr. Division he runs over hurdles that are 36″ instead of 39″ so the time does not count towards qualifying. Next week he will try his hand at the higher hurdles and see if his streak can continue. On the girls side the Jr. Division saw three personal bests. Hannah Hearn broke the Jr. Division record running 11.06, Jillian Bjorn-Caron smashed her previous best by over half a second once again and Bailey Clock was able to tie her best to the hundreth of a second.
The high jump pits were the scene for several notable and top 5 performances. Nick Rayder bested his jump from last week by 8″ clearing 5’4″! Jacob Scammon showed that he is starting to get the hang of competition with very little practice and cleared 2 heights ending up at 4’8″. On the girls side – Moira Lachance was able to once again clear 4’4″ and just nicked 4’6″.
In the girls mile Hannah Twombly, who was chosen as the Sr. Division Girls MVP, won the mile running all alone out in front while Sasha Mclean ran a smart race slowly picking off runner by runner all the way to the finish line to give NYA a 1-2 finish. On the boys side Alex Coffin ran an intelligent well paced race and cruised to a new PR running 4:52.
In the 400 the performance of the day has to go to Bailey Clock who dropped almost 3 seconds off of her time running a 73 and placing 6th.
Over in the shotput circle Cam Rayder was just off his best throwing a hair under 38′ while AJ Hardy hit a 1′ PR throwing over 34′.
Sam Leischman had a great day overall – PRing in the open 200, the 55, his split in the 4×200 AND the shotput.
In the 800 Emily Claytor was able to drop 10 seconds off her 800m time by running confidently and Hillary Detert made her debut in the 800m scoring 6th. On the boys side Nick Kolkin ran his first 800m race of the season and looked comfortable the entire race hitting an open 800m PR of 2:13.
In the 200 one of the most exciting races of the day has to be Christina Reese’s head to head battle with Falmouth. Christina was in lane 4 and Falmouth in lane 3. They were close coming out of the final turn, probably dead even, and Christina was able to push it that extra little bit to win her heat by a 10th of second. Also finishing with strong PRs in the 200 were Maura Anderson cutting 2 tenths off her time and Jake Burns who placed 5th in the Jr. Division and cut almost a full second off his time to slide onto the top 5 all-time list.
In the 2 mile the girls duo of Hannah Twombly and Hillary Detert comfortably finished 1-2 beating the nearest competitor by over a minute. Oddly enough both girls never looked strained and were within throwing distance of their best.
Over in the sand – Jacob Scammon tried his hand at triple jump for the first time (he learned the technique at the meet!) and was able to finish 5th earning the team 2 pts. Renee Lamoreau hit a new PR in the long jump – 13’9″ and grabbed 4th place as well.
In the last event of the evening, the 4x200s, Nyajal Ngoal anchored a strong Jr. Girls 4×200 splitting 31.8, Sarah Jordan anchored the Sr. Divsion team splitting 29.8, and the Sr. boys relay 3 of 4 athletes hit bests in their splits and ran their fastest time of the season (1:43.7).
The team is back in action next Sat. during the day at USM for the final regular season meet.
