The NYA girls ran at Twin Brooks in Cumberland on Saturday morning in the Class C Western Maine Regional Championships. This race is the gateway to the state championships for 1/2 of the teams that step on the line. Saturday there was 9 total teams racing (and a score of other individual runners from schools) and NYA finished 3rd.
The girls had a clear race plan in mind and they all ran very intelligent gutsy races. Every runner bested their time from the race on the same course as last year. Most of them by extremely large margins. I, as a coach, couldn’t be prouder of the efforts out there today and look forward to seeing what we can put together next week up at Belfast at the State Championships. The race for the top 3 was very close and there is still no clear favorite for a state title.
Individually Hillary Detert led the way for NYA finishing 5th overall and earning a top 10 medal. Maggie Meixell followed closely in 11th dropping over 2 min. from a race here a few weeks ago. Sarah Jordan was close behind in 17th and finished in a time one minute faster than last year. Morgan Scully had a battle all the way to finish line that was determined by tenths of a second and ended up 25th while Hadley Gibson rounded out our top 5 finishing in a clear best of over 1 minute. Anna Jaeger ran a gutsy race from the gun, struggled some midrace but pulled it all together to finish strong in 6th for our team and Adela McVicar, running in her first championship race as a freshman ran a steady race finishing stronger than she started and giving NYA a full 7 girl contingent.
Congratulations Girls!
