Cape Elizabeth High School was the site for one of the windiest meets in recent memory.  The boys team was able to hold on to a strong 2nd place finish in the 4 team meet while the girls were a solid 3rd.  The choral concert at 7pm took a chunk of our team and so, once again, we were at less than full strength.  Even with the smaller squad and the exceptionally high winds and cold temperature we had many season and career best performances.  (all photos in this article are courtesy of Fred Field)

In the hurdles there was a stiff head/cross wind that made an event normally based on rhythm and balance quite the challenge.  However the NYA athletes seemed undaunted as Jililan Bjorn-Caron was able to finish in 2nd in the 100m hurdles while Maura Anderson ran a HUGE 1.5 second career best in the event finishing in 22.6.  On the boys side Jake Burns led the way for the boys finishing in 2nd as well while Jake Susla ran a provisional state qualifying time.  In the 300 hurdles Jillian finished in a season best time 2 seconds faster than last week which was good for 4th place while Maura dropped almost 5 seconds off of her time from last week.  On the boys side Jake Burns held on in a close race for the win in the event and dropped under 44 seconds for the first time in his career finishing in 43.9.  Jake Susla was just a little over 1 second off of his career best which was good for 3rd.

In the sprints the wind was still a huge factor yet we still ran several season and career bests as well as a new top  all-time finish.  In the 100m Moira Lachance was the top finisher for the girl tying her career best while Elanor West was able to drop .1 seconds off of her time from last week.  Rhiannon Ramsey-Brimberg ran her first ever competitive race as well just before she needed to head off to the concert.  On the boys side Nick Rayder hit 11.6 seconds which ties for 5th place on our all-time list, wins the event, AND qualifies automatically for the state championship.  Michael McIntosh dropped .2 seconds off of his time from last week to hit a provisional state qualifying time.  Jake Susla ran almost 1 second faster than his career best time after having just finished the hurdles while Myles dropped almost half a second off of his time from last week!  In the 2oom Jillian Bjorn-Caron debuted in the event placing 4th while Kayla Rose and Maura Anderson were seperated by just .1 second in a close battle for 5th place.  On the boys side Nick Rayder hit a provisional qualifying time while Ryan Salerno ran a quick pace to finish almost 1 second faster than his times from indoor.  Robert Field and Phong Ho tried the event for the first time and were neck and neck in times.  In the 400m Muriel Adams began her HS career as a 400 runner by finishing in 2nd in the event while Cam Regan took first place on the boys side in an automatic state qualifying time.  El Tayeb Dahia left it all on the track and finished 5th.

In the throws the javelin and the discus both were hit hard by the wind whipping across the sectors.   Ryan Salerno was the leading finisher on Friday in the Jav with a 7 foot season best just inches away from a state qualifying distance which was good for 2nd place.  Robert Field threw a career best distance by 1 foot while Aaron Guiseley hit a 16 foot(!) season best.  Nate Ward-Chene and Phong Ho tried the event for the first time with solid results as well.  In the discus Kayla Rose threw a 10 foot season best and moved into 5th place on the all-time list to win the event in a provisional state qualifying distance.  Muriel Adams rounded out NYA’s scoring in her debut throw of the season.  On the boys side Cam Rayder won the event while Chase Gendron threw a 17(!) season best good for 5th place.  Clayton Manchester also had a huge season best throw PR’ing by 12(!) feet while Brian Trelegan just missed his career best toss by 1 inch.  In the shotput Kayla Rose was NYA’s sole scorer in the event placing 5th while Nate Ward-Chene was the top finisher for NYA on the boys side.  Evan Kendall also decided to give the event a shot…

In the jumps Moira Lachance and Meaghan O’Leary tied for 4th in the girls high jump while on the boys side Nick Rayder just missed the top 5 and Chase Gendron tried the event for the first time and cleared 5 feet.  In the long jump Meaghan O’Leary was NYA’s sole jumper and jumped straight into a headwind missing her best by under a foot while in the triple jump Brian Trelegan just missed his career best by inches.  The pole vault will be contested this Tuesday at our practice at Greely.

In the distances  Grant McPherson was NYA’s only 800m runner and he was able to grab the boys team some points with a 4th place finish and a provisional state qualifying time.  In the 1600m Hannah Austin was the only competitor for the girls and she also hit a strong season best time and qualified as well.  On the boys side Rudy Guliani and Brian Trelegan ran together for the majority of the race that led them both to career best times and provisional state qualifying times of 4:56 and 5:03 which also were good for 2nd and 3rd place.  In the 3200m Hannah Austin took to the track again to run a HUGE season best time of 13:15 good for 4th, just missing the automatic qualifying time by tenths of a second but was under the provisional time.  On the boys side Rudy Guliani and Evan Kendall ran ran 1-2 for the majority of the race and while they exchanged the lead several times in the last lap Rudy was able to hold on for the win over Evan.   Both boys ran automatic state qualifying times of 10:35.  Kevin Schwarm ran a strong career best time in the 3200 as well.  In the 1600m racewalk Hadley Gibson finished in 4th place while Kevin Schwarm was able to win the event for the boys team.

In the relays the boys 4×100 hit a season best time of 47.5 seconds which was also good for the win and a 5th place spot on the all-time list (Burns, McIntosh, Regan, N. Rayder).  In the 4×400 the girls team finished in 2nd place (Bjorn-Caron, Adams, Rose, Anderson) and the boys team finished in 2nd as well as they ran out of track to catch York (Regan, Kendall, Burns, McPherson).

The team will be back in action on Friday at Traip HS against Traip, Greely, and Waynflete.
