Summer Track – Junior Olympic Track and Field Series

The first round of summer track meets is upon us starting this coming weekend.

The Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships are an all ages event that begin at the state level and continue from there.  There is a State Championship meet that anyone can attend at Scarborough High School this coming Satuday.  The top 6 athletes (and there aren’t that many athletes so most people are top 6 at this level) continue on to the Regional Championship (if they want to…) which this year will be held in Brunswick at Bowdoin College and Brunswick HS.  That meet is June 25-27th.  From there the top athletes can continue to the National Championships if they so choose.  Athletes competing in these meets must not turn 19 until AFTER August 1st.  The races are broken into 2 year age divisions so the compitition is against similarly trained athletes.

The events at this meet are the olympic events meaning they are the normal sprint events, the 400 hurdles instead of the 300 hurdles, the 1500 instead of the 1600, 3000 instead of the 3200, they contest the steeplechase and the 5k as well.  Additionally the multi-events (heptathlon and decathlon) and the hammer are added.

Athletes interested in competing only in the Regional Championship because of a prior commitment have the chance of earning a pass to the next meet if and only if there are less then 6 competitors in the state meet.  This is common in the steeple and the multis.

For those curious the National meet is in Sacramento, CA this year.
