The Boys and Girls Track and Field Teams finally got their state meet in on Wednesday afternoon/evening up at Foxcroft Academy in Dover-Foxcroft. The boys team finished 3rd and the girls team finished 9th. Both teams met their preseason goals with some stellar performances and surprises. Full Results – Boys Girls
The meet started out with stellar performances from the boys and girls 4×800 meter relay teams. The girls had a
season best time which was good for 4th place and the boys ran a season best time which was good for 1st place and a new state record! Hillary Detert, Maggie Meixell, Hadley Gibson, and Emily Harrison made up the girls relay. Henry Sterling, Alex Coffin, Asad Dahia, and Nick Kolkin made up the boys relay.
Mohamed Dahia beat his own school record in the 110m Hurdles to place 2nd. Hannah Bewsey was the only girl to clear 5’2″ in the HJ earning her a gold medal while Maeve Stier made her high school career goal in clearing 5′ to place 3rd. Hilary Gibson ran a season best in the 100 just before running a strong opening leg on the girls 4x100m relay along with Maeve Stier, Maggie Meixell, and Hannah Bewsey to earn a bronze medal and a season best time. Next up was the 1600m where Hillary Detert and Hadley Gibson both smashed their previous personal bests running 5:53 and 6:07 respectively. On the boys side Henry Sterling won the event running 4:19 for a season best while Alex Coffin continued his strong day Rudy Guliani used the 1600 to warmup for a stellar later event. The boys 4×100 had a great outing after several switches in personnel and ran a very gutsy race (Grant McPherson, Jay Garnett, Nick Rayder, Jake Susla).
The girls throws saw Ali O’Reilly place 7th in the Javelin and Jaime Rogers throw a career best of 89′ narrowly missing finals. Over at the pole vault Hilary Gibson grabbed a 7th place medal while Cam Regan regained his form to clear 10′ and earn 5th place. Later on the track Mohamed Dahia came back to grab 4th in the
300m Hurdles while Hannah Bewsey broke her own school record in the same event to earn 5th. In the 3200m we saw Henry Sterling once again a state champion (this makes him the state champion in the 1600 and 3200 for 2 straight years) winning the event in 9:31 while Cam Regan grabbed 5th and Rudy Guliani ran a very impressive race dropping over 20 seconds for 8th. On the girls side Hillary Detert, despite a strong desire to sit out the race, ran a phenomenal 3200 also cutting 20 seconds off her previous time to run well under 13 minutes and just miss a medal.
The meet ended with a very exciting series of 4×400 that saw the girls team (Ali O’Reilly, Maggie Meixell, Maeve Stier, Hannah Bewsey) earn a 5th place spot while the boys (Nick Kolkin, Asad Dahia, Mohamed Dahia, Henry Sterling) finished 6th. That makes 5 out of 6 relays that ran at the meet medal winners. Definitely an impressive day and a great end to the team’s season.
The golden shoe was award to Hadley Gibson on the girls side for her impressive triple in the 4×800 (running a huge season best), 1600 (another best), and 800 (equaling her previous best) and on the boys side to Grant McPherson for, with one days notice, learning how to use starting blocks, do a sprint hand-off and run in a state level 4×100 team with confidence and desire to enable that team to compete.
Henry Sterling and Hannah Bewsey will be heading down to New Britain, CT tomorrow (along with several dedicated supporters – thanks Ali, Nick and Alex) to compete in the New England Championships on Saturday.
