The NYA Track & Field squads showed that they are ready for the championship season in their last regular season meet of the season. The boys team finished 2nd of 4 teams while the girls team finished 3rd by just 5 points.
The meet opened with a 35 second season best in the 1600m Racewalk by Doug Goldstein who won the event in 8:57 (the first time in his career he has been under the 9 min. mark). Doug’s race set the tone for the day. Over 90% of the team had a season best in at least 1 event.
All 3 boys who competed in the 110m hurdles earning points for the team with Mo finishing 2nd, Jake 4th and Patrick (in his first race since injury) finishing 5th. Rudy and Evan ran gutsy races in the 1600m which allowed Rudy to join the sub 5 club in the mile running 4:59 and Evan running his season best of 5:04.8. On the girls side Hadley Gibson ran her debut mile in 6:30 to finish 2nd. Both the boys and girls 4×100 teams were back in action at near full strength with the boys (N. Rayder, Garnett, Kolkin, T. Kelsey) finishing 3rd despite a handoff snafu and the girls
(Hil. Gibson, Stier, Meixell, Bewsey) finishing 2nd with one of the top times in the state in Class C at 54.3.
The boys 800 was an exciting race that ended in all 3 runners setting HUGE personal bests. Asad won the event in 2:05 followed closely by Alex in 2:07 for 3rd. Rounding out our 800 squad was Grant who ran a season and career best by 8 seconds to run 2:17.
The 3200 was our premiere event on the day. On the girls side Hillary Detert won the event in 13:35 and qualified for the state meet. On the boys side we finished 1-2-4-5 grabbing all but 1 scoring position. 3 of the 4 boys qualified for the state meet. Henry Sterling led the pack through the race which helped Cam Regan to run a season best by 20 seconds to finish in 10:38 for 2nd. Rudy Guliani fell off the pack after 3 laps but was able to push through on his own to just dip below the 11 min. mark running 10:58. Evan Kendall was struggling after the 1 mile but was still able to hold himself together to grab the 5th place spot in 11:24.
The girls 4×400 was finally able to have a race where all four runners pushed below 70 seconds to finish first in a season best time of 4:32. Ali and Maeve both split 69, Maggie 68, and Hannah 64.
In the field events Hannah Bewsey broke her own school record in the HJ to win the event jumping 5’3½” and Maeve was able to claim 2nd place with a season best jump of 4’10”. The field events were the girls strongest event set at the meet with the team earning over half their points from the jumps and throws. The LJ saw 2 huge jumps from Maeve and Hillary to go 1-3 in the event (Maeve 15’3.5″, Hilary 14’5.25″) and on the boys side Mohamed hit his season best of 19’5″ to finish 2nd.
In the throws the girls grabbed 3 places in the javelin (Ali 2nd, Jaime 3rd, and Lianna 5th), 2 places in the disc (Katie 3rd, Ali 4th) and 1 place in the shot by Katie who finished 4th with a career best toss of 26′ 1.25″. The boys shot was the best event in the throws on Friday with Cam Rayder just missing the elusive 40′ barrier throwing 39’11.5″ to finish 2nd and Anthony “Ox” Hardy throwing 30’6″ for his PR while Robert Field heaved the shot 30’4″ to just miss his PR by inches.
The boys pole vault went well beyond the conclusion of the track events.
All 3 vaulters earned scoring places finishing 2-3-5. Cam Regan tied the school record at 10’6″ which is a 2 foot season best! Alden Kelsey struggled with his mark jumping 8’6 for 3rd and Evan Kendall vaulted 7’6″ after running both the mile and the 2 mile to finish 5th.
Once again the top 5 lists were rewritten, the record boards editted, and the team is looking sharp going into the WMC Championships this coming Saturday at Yarmouth.
