Boys XC races well in home opener

The NYA Boys Cross-Country team officially kicked off the start of its 2014 regular season on Friday by hosting a meet in Yarmouth’s Royal River Park.  The day was unusually warm and humid, but the 3.1-mile course was dry and fast for the runners from NYA, Freeport, Merriconeag, and Yarmouth.

Matt Malcom ’15 led the NYA boys from the start. At the front of the pack for most of the first half of the race, Matt fell off the pace somewhat in the final mile and took second place overall after a full effort (17:04).  Haley Cunningham ’15 was our number two on the day.  He ran a strong race, despite developing a nasty blister, to finish 14th overall in 19:50. Patrick Jackson ’15 took third on the team, with a steady 21:33 (25th). Jack Kostelnik ’17 came in 26th in 21:34 – a pace not far from his best times of last season, which is a very promising development. John Leblanc ’15 rounded out the scoring five for the Panthers, gutting out a 22:00 (30th place) finish despite an illness.  Jake Malcom ’17 (22:20, 37th) came next and Devlin O’Keefe ’18 (23:08, 49th) finished the varsity scoring.

Devlin led a crew of freshmen who all set personal records in their first 5k race.  Also finishing for NYA were Jack Sillin ’18 (23:34. 50th), Youssef Ayad ’18 (27:46, 53rd), Parker Elkins (29:00, 54th), and Kieran Rowe ’18 (30:36, 55th).

As a team, NYA finished fourth in the meet.

Full race results can be found here.

The Panthers race next on Friday, 12 September on the Oak Hill course at Pineland.
