The NYA Girls XC team had a home meet at Royal River Park in Yarmouth on Friday. The team competed several runners short yet still was able to place 3rd in the 4 team meet. The final scoring was determined by the 6th runner in the field as NYA tied Waynflete in points (both finished with 62) but Waynflete took the 2nd place spot based on a higher finish by their 6th place runner.
Only 6 girls complete the race for NYA on Friday but they did so in stellar fashion. The winner of the race – Hannah Austin – broke her own personal best time in the 5k finishing in 19:48 which also was a course record! Hannah ran to the front of the race immediately and by half a mile in had already established a sizeable lead. Hannah won the race by almost 2 minutes over runner up Juliet Fink from Fryeburg. Claire Maurer also set a personal record in the 5k improving on her time for the 3rd week in a row. Claire finished 9th overall in a time of 22:57 after running a blazing first mile. Sarah Austin was next up in 23:44 which was good for 12th place. Sarah ran a strong pace through the whole race and was able to finish with a strong kick in the last 400m which yielded a huge personal best in the 5k for her as well.
4th up for NYA was Kate Hilscher who pushed through illness for the good of the team – she certainly gave everything she had on Friday. Corinne and Morganne battled back and forth for the 5th spot with Corinne finally pulling ahead to finish the race with another huge time drop. Both girls finished over 2 minutes faster than previous 5k efforts this year.
Now the girls will take a break from regular season competition. The next 2 weeks we are travelling to sizeable invitationals. Next Saturday the girls will race at the Manchester Invitational in Manchester, NH against some of the best competition in New England. The following Saturday we will be up in Belfast, ME for the Festival of Champions.
