The girls cross country team competed at St. Joseph’s College in Standish on Saturday in the Western Maine Conference Championships. The meet was supposed to take place on Friday in Falmouth but was postponed due to course conditions. The new site was an entirely fresh course and the girls adapted well. The trails were narrow and the competition fierce but all of the girls went out hard from the gun and kept pushing through to the finish.
The team finished 4th in the division 2 competition just 2 points behind perennial rival Waynflete without having both Maggie and Sarah. Finishing 5th in the race (just seconds out of the 3rd) was Hillary. Next up for NYA was Hannah who, as a freshman, was able to finish 11th in a competitive field. Her time of 23:35 was a massive personal best and it was over a challenging 5k course in difficult conditions. Next up was Hadley who ran her first race in spikes after her shoe malfunction last week and adapted well to the new experience. Morgan was 4th for NYA and was able to produce exactly what the team needed by continuing to drop her times since her comeback. Ellis finished 5th for the panthers after running a careful race to protect a sore knee. Emilie was 6th up for the girls after going out VERY fast for her normal paces yet still holding it all together for a faster than normal average time.
Coming up this week is the Western Maine Class C Regional Championships at Twin Brooks. The field looks strong this year as we saw at the conference championships. Yarmouth HS, who won the WMC D2 race, will be competing in Class B which leaves NYA in an exciting spot with a strong potential to make it to the state championship meet.
