9/24/11 –
The NYA Boys cross-country team finished 9th of 32 teams in the Small School Division at the Manchester Invitational on Saturday. On a very humid morning, the team fielded runners in three separate boys races: Freshman Boys, JV, and Small School Varsity. The hilly 3.1-mile course was a tough challenge under these conditions, but despite some troubles with injury and illness, the strong New England-wide competition spurred many Panther harriers on to new personal records.
Cam Regan ’12 led the way with a thrilling 4th place finish (out of 221 runners) in the Varsity race. Cam held back in the first mile, moved up in the hilly second mile, and closed the gap with Greely’s top two runners in the last mile. Cam’s final 200 meters saw him open a small lead over his rivals and then hold off several strong charges by the group to take the 4th place medal in a personal record 16:59. Rudy Guliani ’12 was the team’s second runner. He charged up the hill in the second mile and never looked back for a 19th place medal in a personal record 17:29. Evan Kendall ’12 was the third scorer for NYA to collect a medal (28th / 17:51). Injuries and illnesses meant that some of the team’s other runners had to step up their performance. Brian Trelegan ’12 ran a very strong race as the fourth man in 77th (18:59). Ian Moore ’14 moved up to be the fifth scorer (114th / 19:50). Grant McPherson ’12 rounded out the varsity squad (126th / 20:16).
In the JV race, Jake Burns ’13 led the team with a dramatic final kick – passing at least 10 runners in the last 150 meters – on his way to 112th place (out of 324) in 20:02. Robert Field ’12 ran a strong second in this race for a 126th place finish in 20:15. Other runners in the JV race included Ethan Liu ’12 (233rd / 22:29) who barely outdueled Nick Rayder ’12 (236th / 22:34), Oscar Zou ’13 (285th / 24:30), who set a personal record by several minutes, and Phong Ho ’12 (309th / 27:27).
John LeBlanc ’15 was the sole representative in the freshman race. He covered the 2.1-mile freshman course in an impressive 13:22, good for 68th place out of 235 runners.
The team next competes at the Festival of Champions in Belfast on Saturday 1 October.
