9/9/11 – The NYA Boys cross-country team won its biggest regular-season meet in recent history Friday as it triumphed over Greely and Poland. Greely, ranked 3rd overall in the state and Class B State Champions 3 of the last 4 years, had to be considered the heavy favorite coming into the race. But on a cool, clear day, NYA’s boys outraced the Rangers over the 3-mile course at Royal River Park to take the victory. The final score was NYA 26, Greely 29, and Poland 85.
The battle between NYA and Greely started at the top, as NYA’s Cam Regan ’12 jumped out to a quick lead only steps ahead of Greely’s number one, Stefan Sandreuter. Sandreuter took the lead in the middle mile and he and Cam stayed locked in a tight race until the final hill about 400m before the finish. That’s where Cam made a sudden move, opened a gap, and never looked back. Cam won the race of 41 runners with a personal record time of 16:44.
Greely took places 2 and 3, but a fantastic performance by the heart of NYA’s pack cinched the victory. Evan Kendall ’12 (4th / 17:16), Alex Coffin ’12 (5th / 17:24), and Rudy Guliani (6th / 17:31) mixed with Greely’s pack for the first mile or so, but then gradually pulled away and finished with decisive leads over the rest of the Greely pack. Their strong, smart racing carried the day. Brian Trelegan ’12 (10th / 18:11) rounded out the scoring five for NYA. Senior Grant McPherson (11th / 18:27) and the impressive freshman Matt Malcom (13th / 18:41) completed NYA’s varsity seven.
Other NYA runners included Ian Moore ’14 (15th / 18:46) and Jake Burns ’13 (16th / 19:22), both of whom had thrilling sprints to the finish, as well as John LeBlanc ’15 (21st / 20:46), Nick Rayder ’12 (26th / 20:46), Aldis Gamble ’14 (27th / 22:10), Ethan Liu ’12 (33rd / 22:37), and Phong Ho ’12 (40th / 26:03).
