NYA Boys XC @ Falmouth: Surprise Victory over York

9/2/11 – The NYA Boys cross country team opened its WMC schedule on Friday with a strong second-place finish at Falmouth Community Park.  The hilly, grassy 3-mile course proved a good early-season test for the harriers as they squared off against three Class B schools, including powerhouses Falmouth and York.  The final results were: Falmouth 23, NYA 49, York 58, Lake Region 110.

At the starting gun, race favorite Tim Follo (Falmouth) jumped to an early lead, joined by the top York runner and a guest racer from Exeter.  NYA’s top runner, Cam Regan ’12, held back in the opening mile, content to sit behind Falmouth’s strong pack.

In the hilly second mile, Cam moved up the pack and narrowed the gap to the top group.  During the closing mile, Cam dropped the chasing pack and turned his attention to the duel with York’s number one.  In a thrilling kick to the finish, Cam surged ahead to claim 2nd place overall in the 110-man field in a time of 17:20.  Evan Kendall ’12 continued his early-season improvement with a strong 9th-place finish (18:13) followed closely by Alex Coffin ’12 (10th / 18:21).  Both Evan and Alex ran smart races that saw them pick up several places in the final mile.  Rudy Guliani ’12 (12th / 18:45) outkicked several of York’s top runners at the finish, putting 4 of NYA’s runners ahead of York’s #2.  Brian Trelegan ’12 completed NYA’s score with a gutsy 20th place (19:11).  Rounding out the varsity seven were Matt Malcom ’15 (28th / 19:35) and Ian Moore ’14 (31st / 19:52).

Other NYA racers included: Robert Field ’12 (35th / 20:05), Jake Burns ’13 (36th / 20:09), John LeBlanc ’15 (68th / 23:22), Nick Rayder ’12 (82nd / 24:10), Ethan Liu ’12  (86th / 24:34), Oscar Zou ’13 (101st / 28:16), and Phong Ho ’12 (103rd / 29:23).

Full results.

NYA races next on Friday 9/9 at home in Royal River Park.  Come cheer on the girls at 4:30 and the boys at 5:00!
