The NYA Boys Cross-Country team defended its Lake Regional Invitational championship yesterday in the opening race of the 2011 season.  On a warm morning in Bridgton, the team dominated the newly configured 2.8-mile course by taking 5 of the top 9 places and putting 9 runners among the top 25 medal winners.  The team’s 34 points placed it ahead of Windham (56), Fryeburg Academy (70), Lake Region (102), Gray-New Gloucester (137), Sacopee Valley (167), and Poland (182).

NYA’s top finisher was Cam Regan ’12 who placed 4th (out of a field of 81 runners) in 16:06.  Cam ran a steady race, with nearly even split times over the first two miles before finishing strong.

Evan Kendall ’12 cruised in shortly afterwards (6th / 16:22) to lead a pack of NYA harriers that cinched the victory.  Alex Coffin ’12 completed his first cross-country race in fine fashion (7th / 16:28) followed by Brian Trelegan ’12 (8th / 16:59), who executed his race strategy to perfection.

Rudy Guliani ’12 (9th / 17:01) rounded out NYA’s scorers.  Grant McPherson ’12 (18th / 17:46) outkicked Ian Moore ’14 (19th / 17:47) as NYA’s varsity 7 all made the top 20.

Both Jake Burns ’13 (21st / 17:54) and Robert Field ’12 (23rd / 18:01) joined the varsity squad in winning medals at the meet.

Other NYA finishers included John LeBlanc ’14 (41st / 20:02), Ethan Liu ’12 (60th / 22:02), Nick Rayder ’12 (67th / 22:52), and Oscar Zou (77th / 27:11).

The team’s next meet will be Friday 9/2 at Falmouth Community Park.

This panther warns against missing the next race.
