The boys and girls teams had strong showings on Saturday up at Hyde School for the MAISAD Championships on Saturday. The boys team was victorious with almost double the points of the nearest team while the girls were 2nd with significantly lower numbers than the winner. Both teams showed amazing resilience by competing at such a high level in their 4th meet in 2 weeks.
1st place finishes: 15
Total ribbons: 54
1 girls MVP: Hillary Detert
That is an amazing feat!
I can’t write about all of the stellar performances so I will focus on some of the larger season and career bests. For full details please check out the results.
In the boys 110m hurdles the Jakes hit huge PRs. Jake Burns dropped .6 seconds off his best time to qualify automatically for states while Jake Susla dropped over 1 second to do the same. In addition to qualifying those times put both Jakes on the top 5 list! Including Mo we went 1-3-4 in the event. On the girls side Maura Anderson raced the 100m hurdles for the first time and ran a clean race to finish in 6th place. In the 100m dash Nick Rayder and Sam Leishman each cut .2 seconds off their best time to run 12.0 and 12.3 respectively and finish 2-4. On the girls side Moira Lachance dropped the magic .2 as well to run sub 15 for the first time in her career finishing at 14.8.
The 4x100m relay for boys had a very strong race but just missed the final exchange zone and was disqualified (they would have won) while the girls team (made up entirely of runners who have never been in a 4×100) finished 3rd. In the boys 400m NYA had 3 boys in the top 6 with Grant McPherson leading the way in first with a 2.5 second PR of 56.5. El Tayeb Dahia was not far behind in just over 60 seconds for 2nd while Ethan Liu ran 63 which was good for 6th. On the girls side Morgan Scully won the 400m decisively in a career best time of 68.5.
In the 300m hurdles the Jakes once again hit career bests with Jake Burns dipping under the 45 second mark to finish 2nd in 44.9 while Jake Susla hit a HUGE career best time of 47.0 and qualified for the state meet. All three boys hurdlers are now qualified for states in both hurdle events. Maura Anderson continued her attack on the 300m hurdles as well finishing in 5th with a season best time of 73 seconds.
In the boys 800m NYA dominated the field going 1-2-3. Alex Coffin was 1st in 2:05, Asad Dahia was 2nd in a season best time of 2:08 and Grant McPherson was 3rd finishing in 2:13. The next finisher was almost 10 seconds back. On the girls side NYA also swept the top spots finishing 1-2. Hillary Detert won the event in 2:48 while Hadley Gibson was right behind her for 2nd in 2:50. There were 2 career bests in the 200m on Saturday – Nick Rayder hit 25.2 closing in on that state qualifying time and Moira Lachance broke into the 30 range hitting 30.8 for the first time. In the 1500m NYA went 1-2 in a VERY close race. Alex Coffin and Cam Regan finished in 4:29 and 4:30 to just edge the competition and put themselves on the top 5 list. On the girls side Hillary Detert was able to pull away strongly for the win and a spot on the top 5 list as well while Hadley Gibson ran her fastest time of the season hitting 6:03 which was good for 3rd. In the 3000m NYA went 1-2-5 on the boys side with Cam Regan and Rudy Guliani leading the way with top 5 finishes in 10:03 while Brian Trelegan posted an unheard of 42 second career best to finish 5th in 10:20. On the girls side Hillary Detert once again ran away with the race to finish 1st in a top 5 time of 12:27 while Hadley Gibson ran (against her wishes) and was able to easily finish in a very respectable time of 14 minutes (considering she was talking to me the whole race…) which was good for 3rd. Both of the 4x400m relay teams earned first place finishes as well and the girls were able to put together their best time of the season.
In the jumping events Adela and Moira were able to finish 2nd and 4th in the high jump by both clearing 4’6″ though their places were decided on misses. On the boys side Asad finished 2nd with a jump of 5’4″ while Nick Rayder came back from the 4×100 and was off his mark so cleared 5′ and finished 5th. In the long jump Mo had a tight race on his hands exchanging the lead back and forth and finally came up in 2nd with a career best jump of 19’6.25″. In the triple jump Asad finished first and Sam Leishman finished 3rd in his first ever triple jump competition with a jump of 33’9″. In the pole vault Cam Regan had an off day but was still able to win the event with a vault of 8’6″.
In the throwing events NYA went 1-2-4 in the boys shotput with Cam Rayder leading the way with a monster career best distance of 43’1.5″ (also a top 5 distance) next up was AJ Hardy with a 35′ toss and Robert Field rounded out the scoring for us with a put of 33’5″. On the girls side Morgan Scully was 2nd with a career best throw of 28′ 3.5″. Kayla Rose was next up with a 24′ toss which is over a 1′ PR and Julia Thompson (throwing with a hurt shoulder) was able to tie her career best with a throw of 21’1″. In the discus circle Kayla Rose had a HUGE day hitting an 18′ to throw 77′ and finish 4th. On the boys side Cam Rayder led the way once again with another huge PR of 105’10” to win and AJ Hardy hit a career best distance 93’5.5″. Cam Rayder is now qualified in 2 of 3 throwing events. Last but not least – the Javelin. Robert Field hit another day of consistency when we needed it to finish 5th in the Javelin while Brian Trelegan trying his hand at the spear toss and 2 stepped his way to a 60′ throw. On the girls side Emily Harrison met her goal and threw a career best of 60′ while Elanor West continued her steady climb with a PR of 46′.
The golden shoe was awarded to Adela McVicar for her efforts in the HJ, the 2oom, and the 4x100m. Adela stepped up on Saturday to help the team even though her back was extremely sore. On the boys side Jake Susla won the shoe for his outstanding improvements and come back to hurdles after a vicious fall less then 2 weeks ago. Congratulations to all.
The regular season wraps up this Friday at Poland.
