The NYA Boys cross-country team concluded its spectacular season with an impressive performance at the New England Cross-Country Championships in Thetford, VT on Saturday. The weather was perfect – clear, dry, and a pleasant 60 degrees. The course itself was… well… imposing. The 3.1-mile course through the woods of Thetford Academy proved incredibly hilly and, despite the dry day, very muddy.
Under these conditions, on this course, times would be almost meaningless. Cool-headed racing would be the order of the day. At the start, more than 270 of the best runners in New England thundered across the field and toward a narrow path only 200 yards away. The NYA team held back, staying out of the fray that caused several runners to fall, and, after the first mile, began steadily to move up in the field. Cam Regan led the NYA pack, as he has all year. Passing dozens of runners in the last mile, Cam flew to the finish line in 18:35 (127th). Evan Kendall followed shortly thereafter (19:00 / 165th). Rudy Guliani finished third (19:41 / 225th), while Elliot Daniels (19:$5 / 231st) and Grant McPherson (20:06 / 241st) rounded out the the top 5. Brian Trelegan (20:18 / 248th) and Ian Moore (20:57 / 259th) also had excellent races.
Overall, the team finished 28th out of 30 teams, just below Maine powerhouses Cape Elizabeth and Caribou.
Many thanks to the boys for a really fine season. Although we will miss Elliot next year, the future looks bright.
