This past Saturday, on a clear, warm morning, the NYA Boys Cross-Country team won the Lake Region Invitational over 5 other teams. After a summer of hard training, many of the boys were eager to see what they could do against live competition. The result: the top 6 NYA runners won medals and the team took home the winner’s plaque.
It was the first race of the season, a great tune-up for our WMC competition, which opens this week (9/3 at Cape Elizabeth). The other teams in attendance were Gray-New Gloucester, Windham, Lake Region, Fryeburg Academy, and Poland and 73 runners ran the race. Although the course was officially listed at 2.8 miles, it seemed to run a bit shorter than that.
NYA’s top 2, Cam Regan and Evan Kendall, wisely took a measured approach to the first mile but by the end of the first hill loop, they emerged in the top 5. Cam finished 3rd overall in 14:45. Evan was 4th (14:59). Rudy Guliani won an exciting footrace to the line to finish 8th (15:49). Brian Trelegan ran a very strong race for 11th place (16:25). Jake Susla rounded out NYA’s scorers (23rd / 17:18). Elliot Daniels pushed himself hard to come in 24th (17:30). Freshman Ian Moore completed NYA’s varsity 7 squad with his impressive 26th place finish (17:35).
Other NYA runners included: Nick Kolkin (29th / 17:58), Max Maurer (60th / 21:57), and Phong Ho (73rd /29:32).
Congratulations, guys, on a great start to the season!
